Blocked Toilet on the Weekend? 3 Tricks Before You Call the Emergency Service

3 min read

Short & direct

For a blocked toilet, three simple tricks often help: hot water with dish soap, a plunger, or baking soda with vinegar. If nothing works or the water keeps rising, it is a blocked toilet emergency – then you should call the emergency plumber.

It always happens on a Sunday at 10 p.m.: the toilet is blocked, the water level is rising ominously – and the next working day feels like an eternity away. But before you declare a full blocked toilet emergency and reach for the phone, there are three tricks you can try yourself.

First, breathe: stop the water

Before you start, one golden rule: do not flush a second time. If the water is already high, the bowl will overflow. Instead, lift the lid of the cistern and close the flap by hand so no more water comes through. This buys you time and keeps your feet dry.

Trick 1: Hot water and dish soap

The simplest trick first – and surprisingly effective on light blockages:

  1. Squeeze a generous amount of dish soap straight into the bowl.
  2. Heat around three to four litres of water (hot, but not boiling – boiling water can crack the ceramic).
  3. Pour the water briskly into the bowl from about waist height.
  4. Wait 10 to 15 minutes. The soap makes the blockage slippery, and the heat dissolves grease.

Often it gurgles all by itself and the drain is clear again.

Trick 2: The plunger

The classic weapon against a blocked drain. The key is that the cup fully covers the drain opening:

  • Make sure there is enough water in the bowl so the plunger sits airtight.
  • Place the plunger straight down and pump firmly and repeatedly up and down.
  • On the last push, pull away quickly – the suction loosens the blockage.

Tipp: A proper toilet plunger with an extended rubber flange works far better than the flat one from the kitchen. A small purchase that pays off the next time around.

Trick 3: Baking soda and vinegar

If you prefer to go chemical-free, this household trick is your friend:

  1. Pour about one cup of baking soda into the toilet.
  2. Follow it with two cups of vinegar – it foams and fizzes cheerfully.
  3. Let the mixture work for 30 minutes, ideally overnight.
  4. Rinse with hot water.

The reaction dissolves organic deposits and often makes light blockages disappear.

When it is time to call a pro

Sometimes all the plunging in the world does nothing – and that is no reason for shame, but a clear signal. Stop and call the professionals if:

  • the water still will not drain after all three tricks.
  • several drains (shower, sink, toilet) are blocked at the same time – this points to a problem in the main line.
  • there is gurgling or a bad smell, or wastewater backs up somewhere else.
  • the cistern is leaking and you also need to fix the toilet flush.

In these cases a professional drain cleaning is in order – forcing a wire down the pipe often only makes things worse. You can read more about our services on our Plumbing page, and we are happy to explain everything about our emergency service there.
